DoorDash Announces $17 Billion Instacart Deal as Mortgage Rates Ease

DoorDash and Instacart announced a proposed $17 billion acquisition on October 29, a combination that could reshape grocery and restaurant delivery. DoorDash agreed to acquire Instacart for $65 per share in a transaction that still requires regulatory and shareholder approvals. The companies say they will continue operating separately until closing.

The companies argue their combined networks could help retailers reach customers and give delivery workers more earning opportunities. But a combination of two major platforms also raises questions about competition, fees, worker bargaining power and the choices consumers will have. These are potential outcomes, not established effects of a deal that has not yet closed.

For households weighing major expenses, mortgage borrowing costs also shifted this week. Freddie Mac reported that the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate declined to 7.24% on October 29 from 7.32% the previous week. The average was 6.17% a year earlier, meaning financing remains significantly costlier than at the same point in 2025.

What it means: A lower weekly mortgage average may offer modest relief, but loan rates still depend on individual circumstances. And the proposed delivery merger deserves scrutiny from customers, retailers and workers alike.
