MADRID — A tragic incident unfolded early Thursday on the Spanish island of Mallorca as a fire erupted in a residential building in the popular tourist area of Magaluf, claiming two lives and causing injuries to several others, as confirmed by authorities.
The blaze, which started around 5 a.m. on the third floor of the building, quickly spread, engulfing the entire structure. Despite efforts from residents to extinguish the flames, they were unable to contain the fire, leading to its eventual suppression after approximately two hours.
Reports indicate that four individuals are currently hospitalized, with around 20 residents impacted by the tragic event. Temporary accommodation will be provided by nearby hotels to those affected by the fire.
Among the casualties were a 58-year-old Argentine national and an unidentified woman, both located in separate apartments within the building. Authorities have cordoned off the area where the fire originated, along with the surrounding floors for further investigation.
Magaluf, known for its vibrant beach and nightlife scene popular among young British and German tourists, is situated in the coastal town of Calvià, approximately 22 kilometers west of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands.
In response to the tragic incident, local authorities have declared a two-day period of mourning to honor the lives lost in the fire.
