A road accident in Colombia involving several vehicles kills at least 2 people and injures 19

Tragedy struck a busy highway in central Colombia on Wednesday morning as a pile-up at a toll booth claimed the lives of at least two people and left 19 others injured. Witnesses reported hearing several explosions as images of the collision showed vehicles engulfed in flames.

The fatal crash occurred when a milk truck lost control of its brakes, colliding with six other vehicles and a motorcycle at a toll booth in the Cundinamarca region, located 50 kilometers north of the capital city of Bogota, according to Governor Emilio Rey.

Governor Rey confirmed that the injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals, although no specific details regarding their conditions were provided.

Distressing scenes captured by Colombian media depicted individuals crying as they assisted or rescued those trapped in the wreckage, with vehicles ablaze and severely damaged.

Witness Hollman Osma recounted the harrowing incident, stating, “I saw when the truck plowed through the toll booth, followed by an explosion, overturning of the vehicle, and subsequent intense explosions and fires engulfing the scene. There was nothing that could be done.”

A significant emergency response effort was mobilized, with at least 11 ambulances, firefighters, and police officers dispatched to the area, Governor Rey confirmed. The affected road remains closed as investigations continue.
