Algeria rallies past Jordan 2-1 for its first win at a World Cup since 2014

Algeria’s thrilling comeback victory over Jordan at the World Cup has set the stage for a potential knockout round berth after a stunning display in Santa Clara, Calif. The North African nation found themselves trailing early on, but two second-half goals from corner kicks turned the tide in their favor.

The hero of the match was second-half substitute Nadhir Benbouali, who rose highest to head in a corner kick in the 69th minute, leveling the score and igniting Algeria’s comeback. The decisive moment came in the 82nd minute when Amine Gouiri pounced on a loose ball in the box, deflecting it off the Jordanian goalkeeper and into the net to secure the victory.

Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We deserved to win this game. It certainly gives us a lot of confidence and belief ahead of our next match.” This win marked a significant milestone for Algeria, as it was the first time they had ever won a World Cup game after conceding the first goal.

After a disappointing 3-0 loss to Argentina in their opening match, Algeria now has a chance to finish second in Group J and secure a spot in the knockout round with a win against Austria in their next fixture. Midfielder Ibrahim Maza emphasized the importance of the victory, saying, “The three points are the most important thing. I think we have more confidence to go to the next game. We will fight even more than today.”

On the other hand, Jordan’s hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds were dashed following their second consecutive defeat. Despite a valiant effort in their first World Cup appearance, Jordan coach Jamal Sellami acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, particularly in defending set pieces.

The momentum shifted in Algeria’s favor after Benbouali’s equalizer, with the team dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Petkovic praised his team’s improved performance in the second half, attributing their success to better decision-making and execution on the field.

Overall, Algeria’s victory over Jordan showcased their resilience and determination on the world stage. With one more crucial match remaining in the group stage, the Algerian squad will be looking to build on this momentum and secure their place in the knockout round of the World Cup.
