David Muir recently had the opportunity to meet with Tony Soraci, a grandson of Italian immigrants who played a crucial role in the restoration project of the Statue of Liberty. As they entered the museum on Liberty Island, Soraci shared his experience of preserving the original torch, which had weathered a century in the middle of the ocean.
“The statue had been up there for 100 years, out in the middle of the ocean,” Soraci explained, reflecting on the toll that time had taken on the iconic symbol of freedom. Housch explained, “The copper is so thin, it’s really just like almost two pennies in your hand. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty was strategically positioned so that all incoming immigrants to New York Harbor would be greeted by Lady Liberty’s face.
