These frameworks aim to register agents as distinct identity objects with their own policies, authentication requirements, and lifecycle management.
Despite these efforts, compliance frameworks have not yet caught up with the rapid proliferation of AI agents in enterprise environments. Auditors are often ill-equipped to assess the security risks posed by these agents, as existing control catalogs do not account for the unique characteristics of agent identities.
In response to these challenges, security directors are advised to take proactive steps to secure their organizations against the growing threat of AI agents. This includes conducting an agent census, stopping the practice of cloning human accounts for agents, auditing all MCP and API access paths, improving logging to distinguish agents from humans, and building a compliance case for agent governance before auditors arrive.
