At least 3 hospitalized, 8 arrested as another ‘teen trend’ causes chaos in the Loop
A recent incident in downtown Chicago has once again brought attention to the issue of “teen trends” or large groups of teenagers causing chaos in public areas. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, saw around 400 teenagers flooding the streets of the Loop, leading to fights, shoplifting, and other disruptive behavior.
The situation escalated to the point where three people had to be taken to the hospital for injuries sustained during the attacks. Chicago police responded by arresting eight juveniles and issuing curfew citations to 24 others. The incident took place during Chicago Public Schools’ spring break week, with only the downtown area experiencing the brunt of the chaos.
The trouble began around 7:30 p.m. near the Wrigley Building, with the crowd moving across the river and causing further disturbances. Reports of teenagers tasing each other, fighting on CTA tracks, and engaging in other violent behaviors began to surface. One particularly disturbing incident involved a migrant vendor having her knife stolen and being threatened with it by a group of teenagers.
Random attacks, harassment of homeless individuals, and vandalism of property were also reported throughout the downtown area. A violent attack on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street was captured on video, with the victim being knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital. Moments later, another group was seen tasing and pepper spraying each other.
In response to the escalating situation, Chicago police enforced the city’s 10 p.m. curfew, leading to the dispersal of the crowd and the detention of those who did not comply. Alderman Brian Hopkins, who has been advocating for a “snap curfew” ordinance, witnessed the effectiveness of curfew enforcement firsthand.
Several individuals, including teenagers, were arrested and charged with offenses ranging from misdemeanor reckless conduct to felony aggravated assault of peace officers. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with large groups of unruly teenagers in public spaces.
As the city grapples with the aftermath of this latest incident, it is clear that more needs to be done to address the root causes of such behavior and ensure the safety of residents and visitors in downtown Chicago.
