Atlanta Braves turn in minor league prospect Jonathan Matos Morales who allegedly fled deadly Florida crash
The Atlanta Braves made headlines recently when they turned in one of their former minor league prospects, Jonathan Matos Morales, who was accused of fleeing the scene of a deadly crash on a Florida interstate. The incident, which took place on I-75 in Manatee County, resulted in the tragic death of a father of four.
According to reports from the Florida Highway Safety Patrol, Morales was driving his 2022 black Ford Mustang when he collided with a Chevy Trailblazer in the center lane. The impact of the crash pushed the Chevy into the right lane, where it was then struck by a semi-truck. The semi-truck subsequently swerved, flipped over, and came to a stop on its side.
Despite briefly stopping after the collision, Morales fled the scene southbound. The driver of the semi-truck, Owen Facey, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the SUV driver sustained minor injuries.
Prior to the crash, Morales was allegedly observed weaving in and out of traffic, making it difficult for the truck driver to avoid the collision. The Braves were able to track down Morales later that day after recognizing his Mustang in the parking lot of their spring training facility, CoolToday Park.
Morales, who was described as a former signee of the Braves’ minor league system, was arrested for vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. He is currently being held in the Manatee County Jail on a $200,000 bond and has been ordered onto supervised release.
During his court appearance, Morales’ lawyer argued for a lower bond, citing his minimal income in the baseball farm system, lack of criminal history, and long-standing American citizenship. However, the State Attorney’s Office raised concerns about Morales being a flight risk based on a previous traffic citation and alleged comments indicating such a possibility.
The crash, which remains under investigation, has left the family of Owen Facey grieving the loss of their loved one. Facey’s mother described him as a hero for attempting to steer his truck away from the Trailblazer in an effort to save lives.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Braves organization expressed their condolences to all parties involved and confirmed that Morales had been under their minor league contract. The impact of this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the devastating consequences of reckless behavior on the road.
