Bruce Blakeman rips NY Gov. Kathy Hochul for $1.5B Zohran Mamdani budget ‘bailout’

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman has criticized Governor Kathy Hochul for allocating $1.5 billion in state funds to New York City to assist in addressing a budget shortfall under Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Blakeman argued that the funds should instead be utilized to reduce school taxes across New York State. He accused Hochul of being influenced by Mamdani’s recent endorsement of her re-election campaign.

Blakeman emphasized that the timing of Mamdani’s endorsement and the subsequent allocation of funds to New York City raised suspicions. He stated, “New Yorkers deserve leadership that respects every community. I will be a governor for all – not just for Zohran Mamdani.”

Despite the city’s projected deficit decreasing from $12 billion to $7 billion over the next two years, Hochul planned to provide $1 billion in the current fiscal year and an additional $510 million in the following year as relief to the city. Blakeman expressed concern over the disparity in financial support between New York City and other regions in the state.

Blakeman pointed out other financial commitments made by Hochul that predominantly benefit New York City, such as increased funding for childcare and voucher programs totaling nearly $1.8 billion annually, with a significant portion allocated to the city. He also highlighted the ongoing costs associated with New York City’s sanctuary city policies, estimating that funds for asylum seeker services would exceed $6 billion over multiple years.

In response, Hochul’s campaign criticized Blakeman, labeling him as an ally of former President Trump and out of touch with the needs of New Yorkers. They highlighted Hochul’s efforts to cut middle-class taxes, provide inflation refund checks, and expand affordable childcare. The campaign spokesperson accused Blakeman of supporting policies that would make groceries more expensive and harm small businesses.

The ongoing political discourse between Hochul and Blakeman revolves around the allocation of state funds to New York City and the perception of favoritism towards the city over suburban and upstate regions. Hochul’s decision to provide partial bailout to the city was seen as a strategic move to address the city’s budget challenges and counter progressive calls for tax increases on the wealthy and corporations.

Hochul defended her decision to support New York City, stating that a strong city contributes to a stronger state. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between the state and the city to benefit working families. The debate over the allocation of state funds and financial priorities continues as the gubernatorial race intensifies.
