California Man Allegedly Drains $84,000 From Elderly Victim After Masquerading As McAfee Security Representative
A Rosemead resident has been taken into custody for allegedly impersonating a McAfee Security representative and swindling tens of thousands of dollars from a 70-year-old man in Camarillo.
The victim reported the theft to authorities in May 2026 after receiving a call from someone claiming to be from the security software company, as reported by KTLA 5 News. The scammer, who provided accurate banking information to appear legitimate, convinced the elderly man that his bank account had been compromised.
Over the course of a few days, the fraudster persuaded the victim to withdraw $84,000 in cash and meet with a supposed McAfee Security employee, instructing him to provide a verbal security code before handing over the money. It wasn’t until after the transaction that the victim realized he had fallen victim to a scam and promptly contacted the Camarillo Police Department.
On June 30th, authorities apprehended the suspect, Binchao Cen, while he was en route to potentially defraud another victim. Cen was found in possession of a significant amount of cash and a modified airsoft gun at the time of his arrest. He now faces charges of theft by false pretenses, grand theft, and theft from an elderly adult, with bail set at $500,000.
