Canadian Man Allegedly Impersonates Crypto Support Agents To Drain $13,000,000 From Victims
A recent case in the US involving a Canadian man accused of overstaying his visa has shed light on a cryptocurrency fraud scheme that has reportedly defrauded victims of over $13 million. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, 19-year-old Trenton Richard David Johnston allegedly posed as a support representative for well-known search engines and crypto-related companies to gain unauthorized access to victims’ digital accounts and cryptocurrency wallets while residing in Miami.
The fraudulent activities orchestrated by Johnston and his accomplices resulted in the transfer of victims’ cryptocurrency holdings for their own gain, leading to losses exceeding $13 million. In addition to Johnston, 28-year-old Brandon Michael Tardibone of Miami has also been charged for harboring Johnston while he was unlawfully present in the US and assisting in laundering proceeds from the fraudulent scheme.
It is reported that the pair used more than $1 million in illicit proceeds to finance luxury vehicles, jewelry, and nightlife expenses. Johnston is facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, each carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years. Tardibone, on the other hand, is charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and harboring an alien in the US, with potential prison sentences of up to 20 years and 10 years, respectively.
This case serves as a reminder of the risks associated with cryptocurrency fraud and the importance of remaining vigilant when it comes to protecting digital assets. Authorities are working diligently to hold perpetrators of such schemes accountable and prevent further exploitation of innocent individuals in the crypto space. Stay informed and stay safe.
