Candlelight vigil for rape survivor draws UC Santa Barbara community
Students and members of the Isla Vista community came together on Tuesday night for a somber vigil in response to an unsolved rape and strangulation case near UC Santa Barbara. The incident has left many on campus feeling fearful and frustrated as the perpetrator remains at large.
The vigil, held at Greek Park, was a solemn gathering as the sun set, with attendees forming small circles along the pathways. People stood quietly, wrapped in hoodies and jackets, some with folded hands or crossed arms as they listened to the speakers.
The event was organized in response to an alleged rape and strangulation that took place near UCSB, which was first reported on May 10. The incident is believed to have occurred on May 9, when the victim and an unknown suspect met at a party in Isla Vista. The suspect has not been identified, leaving the campus community on edge.
The victim’s family has publicly called for additional law enforcement involvement in the case, expressing concerns about the resources and experience of the UCSB Police Department. They have retained an attorney and private investigator to help in the search for the perpetrator.
As darkness fell, the attendees at the vigil held candles, their silhouettes against the fading sky symbolizing the transition from sunset to night. The gathering was both a show of support for the survivor and a plea for justice in a case that continues to unsettle the community.
The victim’s family is now urging the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department to join the investigation, citing the need for a larger agency with more resources to help apprehend the suspect. Their focus remains on seeing the perpetrator behind bars and finding answers in a situation fraught with uncertainty.
The vigil at Greek Park was a poignant moment of solidarity and remembrance, a reminder of the impact of violence on a community and the ongoing quest for accountability. As the candles flickered in the evening breeze, the message was clear: justice must be served.
