The breach was disclosed by Instructure on May 1, following unauthorized activity on April 29. The group responsible for the cyberattack, ShinyHunters, is known for previous data theft campaigns targeting major companies. The attackers threatened to release stolen data unless a ransom was paid by May 12, leading to disruptions in the Canvas platform during final exams at many schools.

According to ShinyHunters, the breach impacted nearly 9,000 schools worldwide and exposed the data of 275 million individuals. While Instructure has not found evidence of additional data being stolen, users are urged to remain cautious as the extent of the breach is still being verified.

The compromised information includes usernames, school email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages exchanged through Canvas. Although passwords, dates of birth, and financial information were not involved, the exposed data could still be valuable for scammers. Phishing attempts posing as teachers or classmates could deceive users into disclosing sensitive information.

To protect themselves, students and parents are advised to confirm if their school was affected by contacting school administrators or checking for official communications. They should be wary of suspicious emails or texts asking for personal information and navigate directly to official websites for any updates. Parents may consider placing a credit freeze on their child’s credit file to prevent identity theft, while college students should also take precautions.
