More Than Just a Party: The History

Commonly mistaken for Mexican Independence Day (which is actually in September), Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It was a classic “David vs. Goliath” moment where an outnumbered Mexican army defeated the powerhouse French forces. This victory became a symbol of strength and unity: values we hold dear here in our neighborhood.

A Brownstone Twist: Turmeric Jerk Chicken Street Tacos

To celebrate, we’re fusion-cooking! We’ve taken our signature Brownstone Turmeric Jerk blend: available through the Brownstone Marketplace: to create a taco that is as vibrant as the holiday itself.

Turmeric Jerk Spice Blend

Ingredients:

  • Chicken thighs (boneless/skinless)
  • Brownstone Turmeric Jerk blend
  • Fresh lime juice
  • Corn tortillas
  • Fresh cilantro, diced white onion, and sliced avocado
Searing the Chicken

Instructions:

  1. Marinate: Coat the chicken generously in the Turmeric Jerk blend and a splash of lime juice. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes to soak up that earthy flavor.
  2. Sear: Grill or sear in a hot skillet until charred and cooked through. The turmeric gives it a stunning golden glow.
  3. Assemble: Slice the chicken and serve on warm corn tortillas. Top with cilantro, onion, and a slice of avocado.
