CPD catches 2 men carrying guns during one encounter at Loop CTA station: report
Chicago Police Seize Firearms, Arrest Two Men at CTA Station in Loop
On Sunday morning, Chicago police officers made significant progress in reclaiming the city’s train lines by seizing two firearms and arresting two men at the CTA station in the Loop. This incident marks a continued effort to improve safety on public transportation.
The CPD’s Public Transportation Section Tactical Team was conducting a routine train check at the Clark-Lake station around 11:30 a.m. when they encountered Shane Doty, 25, with an open bottle of alcohol. Upon further inspection, officers discovered a loaded ghost gun in Doty’s possession. Simultaneously, they noticed 23-year-old Sir Russell adjusting his waistband and attempting to flee. After a brief pursuit, officers apprehended Russell and found a firearm on his person.
Of particular concern was Russell’s criminal history, as he had recently been released from prison for a previous weapons possession charge. He now faces charges of being a felon in possession of a weapon and obstructing police, while Doty is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
The Trump Administration’s pressure on the CTA to enhance safety measures on transit lines has led to increased law enforcement presence. The Cook County Sheriff’s Police have also joined efforts to ensure a safer commute for passengers, making arrests for illegal gun possession on the Red Line.
In response to these efforts, the CTA has redirected funds from private security contracts to support law enforcement patrols and specialized professionals. This shift in strategy aims to enhance the overall security and effectiveness of public transportation.
