Dave Venturella to serve as acting ICE director, DHS announces

When Todd Lyons steps down from his position as Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the end of the month, Dave Venturella, a former career ICE agent, will be stepping in to take his place. This decision was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security, with a spokesperson stating that Venturella, a close ally of border czar Tom Homan, will serve as the Acting ICE Director.

Venturella brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously worked at a private prison group. His appointment is seen as in line with DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s strategy of selecting a low-key candidate to lead the agency, which has the largest law enforcement budget in the country.

Lyons announced his departure last month, citing a desire to spend more time with his family in his resignation letter. He expressed the importance of being present for his sons during a pivotal time in their lives, and emphasized his confidence in ICE’s ability to continue carrying out its responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.

It remains unclear whether Venturella will be nominated for the position on a permanent basis or if he will serve in an acting capacity. ICE has been without a Senate-confirmed director since 2017, adding to the significance of Venturella’s appointment.

During Lyons’ tenure, ICE experienced significant growth under the Trump administration, with increased funding and resources allocated through key legislative measures. The agency undertook enhanced immigration enforcement efforts in major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis, in line with President Trump’s campaign promises.

As Venturella prepares to take the reins at ICE, the agency faces ongoing challenges and responsibilities in maintaining border security and enforcing immigration laws. His leadership will be crucial in navigating these complex issues and upholding the agency’s mission.
