Disaster drills helped prevent more deaths when powerful quake hit the Philippines

In the Philippines, officials credited years of disaster-preparedness drills for minimizing casualties when a powerful earthquake struck the southern region, leaving 55 people dead and 31 missing. The 7.8 magnitude quake, which hit off Sarangani province, injured over 1,120 individuals and displaced more than 45,000 residents. Despite the widespread damage to homes and buildings, the drills helped people respond effectively to the crisis and avoid further harm.

The aftermath of the earthquake was captured in videos shared on social media, showcasing the chaos and fear that gripped the affected communities. Schools, in particular, faced harrowing moments as students and teachers navigated the tremors and aftershocks. Despite the intense situation, many schools reported no injuries, highlighting the importance of preparedness and quick thinking in emergencies.

Teresito Bacolcol, from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, emphasized the value of disaster response drills in saving lives during such catastrophic events. He commended the proactive measures taken by schools and communities in anticipation of earthquakes, noting that prompt action and adherence to safety protocols were crucial in mitigating the quake’s impact.

The Philippines, known for its vulnerability to natural disasters, faces frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Despite the challenges posed by these geological phenomena, the country’s commitment to preparedness and resilience serves as a testament to its ability to weather such crises with strength and determination.
