Disney to pay $10M to resolve alleged violations of child privacy laws, Justice Dept. says

The Walt Disney Co. Agrees to $10 Million Settlement for Alleged Violation of Child Privacy Laws

The Justice Department announced on Tuesday that The Walt Disney Co. has agreed to pay a $10 million civil penalty to settle allegations of violating child privacy laws. The case involves Disney Worldwide Services Inc. and Disney Entertainment Operations LLC, and the federal court order also prohibits Disney from operating on YouTube in a manner that violates the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

The court order mandates that Disney create a program to ensure future compliance with the privacy law on YouTube. The law requires websites and apps targeting children under 13 to inform parents about the collection of personal information and obtain parental consent.

Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate stated, “The Justice Department is firmly committed to ensuring parents have a say in how their children’s information is collected and used.”
