Dozens killed as 2 powerful earthquakes rock Venezuela, president says

Two devastating earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck the coast of Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of dozens of people. The double earthquake rocked the capital, Caracas, and surrounding areas, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

Venezuela’s acting President, Delcy Rodriguez, addressed the nation, revealing that at least 32 people had lost their lives and over 700 had been injured as a result of the quakes. She declared a nationwide state of emergency, citing severe damage to buildings and infrastructure in Caracas and other affected areas. Metro and rail services were suspended, and the Maiquetía International Airport was closed due to reported damage.

The aftermath of the earthquakes saw a series of aftershocks, with at least 20 reported following the initial tremor. Rescue efforts were underway in areas like Alta Mira and Palos Grandes, where buildings had collapsed, trapping people under rubble. Photos and videos from Caracas showed the extent of the damage, with rescue crews working tirelessly to locate survivors and provide medical assistance to those in need.

The United States announced its readiness to assist, with Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau stating that aid was being mobilized for Venezuela. Search-and-rescue teams, medical supplies, and humanitarian assistance were being prepared for deployment to support the affected population. The US embassy in Caracas confirmed that all staff were safe and accounted for.

The earthquakes, classified as a foreshock and mainshock by the US Geological Survey, prompted a “red alert” for potential fatalities and widespread damage. The USGS warned of the likelihood of high casualties and extensive destruction, necessitating a coordinated national and international response to the disaster.

Tsunami advisories were issued, with the possibility of hazardous waves affecting coastal areas within 300 kilometers of the epicenter. While the initial advisory expired, authorities remained vigilant for any further threats or aftershocks in the region.

In the face of this tragedy, the global community stands united in providing support and assistance to the people of Venezuela as they begin the arduous task of rebuilding and recovering from the devastating earthquakes that have shaken their nation.
