Employee at Billion Dollar Bank Embezzles $44,000 From Customer Accounts Before Being Banned From Industry
An employee at a renowned $23.8 billion bank recently made headlines for embezzling $44,000 worth of customer funds before facing serious repercussions. Former Bank of Hawaii employee, Alohi Kaupu-Grace, aged 23, was found guilty of stealing from customer accounts and manipulating their signatures on cash withdrawal slips and cashier’s check purchase slips.
After being caught red-handed, Kaupu-Grace paid back a portion of the stolen amount, totaling $5,200, to the bank. However, this act of partial restitution did not save her from being terminated from her position in March. In addition to losing her job, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors imposed a ban on Kaupu-Grace, preventing her from working in any of the Fed’s insured depository institutions. This ban is set to remain in effect indefinitely unless revoked by the Board of Governors.
Despite the Federal Reserve’s actions, the ban does not shield Kaupu-Grace from potential legal consequences from other Federal or state agencies. In a separate incident in May, the Hawaii Island police arrested Kaupu-Grace for allegedly using someone else’s credit card information for unauthorized purchases. The victim became aware of the fraudulent activity after receiving a notification from his credit card company about a suspicious transaction. Subsequent investigations led the authorities back to Kaupu-Grace, who allegedly obtained the victim’s confidential information during her time at Bank of Hawaii.
Kaupu-Grace now faces charges of second-degree theft, second-degree identity theft, unauthorized possession of personal confidential information, and fraudulent use of a credit card. This series of events has not only tarnished her reputation but also raised concerns about the security measures in place at financial institutions.
As the case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining strict protocols and oversight within the banking industry to prevent similar incidents in the future. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
