Evgeni Malkin re-signs with Penguins to return 21st NHL season
Evgeni Malkin, the beloved Penguins star, has signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract to return for his 21st NHL season with the team. At 40 years old, Malkin has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh and expressed his excitement about staying with the team for another year. The new deal includes performance bonuses of up to $3.5 million and a no-movement clause.
President of hockey operations Kyle Dubas mentioned that discussions with Malkin had been ongoing for several weeks, leading to his decision to return to the Penguins for another season. Malkin, who never wanted to leave Pittsburgh, understood the possibility of the team wanting to make changes but ultimately decided to stay.
Throughout his career, Malkin has been a key player for the Penguins, winning three Stanley Cups with the team in 2009, 2016, and 2017. He holds significant records within the franchise, including being second in all-time games played, third in goals scored, and second in game-winning goals. Only Sidney Crosby has played more seasons with the Penguins than Malkin.
Drafted second overall in the 2004 NHL Draft, Malkin made his debut in 2006 and has since become a fan favorite in Pittsburgh. With his return for another season, Malkin looks forward to continuing his legacy with the Penguins and contributing to the team’s success on the ice.
