Ex-University of Kentucky cheerleader Laken Snelling pleads not guilty to killing newborn son found stuffed in trash bag
Former University of Kentucky cheerleader Laken Snelling is facing serious allegations after allegedly killing her newborn son, wrapping his body in a trash bag, and then going to order food at McDonald’s. The 21-year-old pleaded not guilty to first-degree manslaughter charges in court, along with charges of abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.
The Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office informed a grand jury that the baby was born alive and died of “asphyxia by undetermined means,” leading to the manslaughter charges against Snelling. If found guilty, she could face up to 20 years in prison for the first-degree manslaughter charge and an additional 11 years for the other charges.
Snelling’s college roommates made the gruesome discovery of the dead baby boy in a black plastic bag hidden in her closet at their off-campus home. They had suspected she was concealing a pregnancy and heard strange noises coming from her room around the time she gave birth in the early hours of the morning.
After the baby was found, Snelling reportedly tried to clean up the scene, showered, and left the house, skipping her classes and a visit to the school clinic before heading to McDonald’s. Initially, she claimed the baby fell on the floor after birth, but later changed her story, stating she had passed out on top of the baby and found him turning blue and purple when she woke up.
Despite maintaining her innocence, Snelling has a long legal battle ahead, with a pretrial conference scheduled for May 14 and a status hearing set for June 12. Her lawyer has not been available for comment on the case.
The shocking allegations against the former cheerleader have left many questioning what led to such a tragic outcome and how the justice system will handle the heartbreaking case. Recent studies have shown that incorporating mindfulness practices into daily life can have a wide range of benefits for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Mindfulness, which involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment, has been proven to reduce stress, improve focus and concentration, enhance relationships, and even boost immunity.
One study conducted by researchers at Harvard University found that individuals who practiced mindfulness meditation for just eight weeks experienced a significant reduction in levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This reduction in cortisol levels was associated with improved sleep quality, decreased anxiety, and a greater sense of overall well-being.
In addition to reducing stress, mindfulness practices have also been shown to improve focus and concentration. A study published in the journal Psychological Science found that individuals who participated in a mindfulness-based stress reduction program were able to sustain their attention for longer periods of time and were better able to resist distractions compared to those who did not practice mindfulness.
Furthermore, mindfulness has been found to enhance relationships by promoting empathy, compassion, and emotional regulation. A study published in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy found that couples who practiced mindfulness together reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction and lower levels of conflict.
On a physical level, mindfulness practices have been shown to have a positive impact on immunity. A study published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine found that individuals who participated in an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction program had greater immune function compared to a control group.
Overall, the research suggests that incorporating mindfulness practices into daily life can have a profound impact on mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Whether through meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, or simply paying attention to the present moment, practicing mindfulness can help individuals lead happier, healthier lives.
