Exclusive | Senators aim to reduce pesky political junk mail, end key federal subsidy to Republican and Democratic Party

The Senate is taking steps to reduce the amount of political mail flooding households by introducing new legislation that would eliminate a key federal subsidy currently enjoyed by Republican and Democratic party committees. Senators Joni Ernst and Catherine Cortez Masto are leading the charge with the Ending Subsidies for Political Junk Mail Act, which aims to force political parties to pay the normal mailing rate instead of receiving a 40-60% discount through the US Postal Service.

Ernst emphasized the need to end the “welfare for Washington consultants” by ensuring that political parties pay full price for sending out unwanted junk mail, while everyday citizens have to pay regular rates for sending essential mail. The legislation comes in response to the staggering amount of political mail sent out during the 2024 presidential election cycle, with over 2.3 billion pieces inundating households.

The US Postal Service has been facing financial challenges, losing billions of dollars annually due to various factors, including a decline in mail volume and pension obligations. With the Postal Service struggling financially, there is no justification for subsidizing political spam that ultimately ends up in the trash, according to Ernst.

The bipartisan measure also aims to level the playing field for other organizations that do not receive the same nonprofit discount rate enjoyed by political committees. While religious, educational, and charitable organizations qualify for the discounted rate, everyday citizens contacting their elected officials do not receive any such benefit.

As the 2026 midterm election cycle approaches, both parties are gearing up to bombard homes with political mailers. The proposed legislation seeks to provide relief to Americans from the onslaught of junk mail and ensure that political campaigns do not receive government discounts to flood mailboxes with election materials.

Overall, the Ending Subsidies for Political Junk Mail Act addresses the disparity in mailing rates between political parties and other organizations, aiming to reduce the volume of political mail sent out while also addressing the financial challenges faced by the US Postal Service. It underscores the importance of fair and equitable mailing practices, especially in the lead-up to critical election cycles.
