Flu Season Arrives Weeks Early, and a Blood Test Just Got More Honest

Flu activity is still classified as low nationwide, but this season is getting an unusually early start. CDC surveillance data show hospitalizations for this point in the season are at their highest since the twenty-ten-to-twenty-eleven season. The H-one-N-one strain is dominant, and several states are reporting early increases.

An early start does not guarantee a severe season. Still, health officials are urging everyone six months and older to get vaccinated before holiday gatherings. Forecasts can look several weeks ahead, but they are not a guarantee of what the season will bring.

There is also an encouraging research update on Alzheimer’s testing. Researchers at University Medicine Halle reported a two-step blood-test method that first isolates tau proteins originating in the brain, then measures a key Alzheimer’s marker. In their study, this helped distinguish Alzheimer’s from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, where conventional tests can be harder to interpret. The approach is promising, but it needs further validation before it can be treated as a routine diagnostic test.

For now, consider getting your flu shot, check with a local pharmacy or clinic about availability, and cover coughs when spending time with others. These simple steps can help protect you and the people around you.
