‘Guess who lives on my block’
Lorena Bobbitt, now known as Lorena Gallo, has come a long way since the infamous incident that made her a household name. Over three decades after she shocked the nation by cutting off her husband’s penis, she is now living a quiet life in the suburbs with her partner, Dave Bellinger, and their daughter, Olivia.
The couple resides in a rented four-bedroom home in Prince William County, just an hour south of Washington, DC. They lead a seemingly normal life, walking their dog, attending church together, and blending in with their neighbors. However, Bellinger’s criminal record, which includes multiple offenses like credit card theft and embezzlement, adds a layer of complexity to their story.
Despite their attempts to live a quiet life, the couple remains a topic of conversation in their community. Neighbors joke about Bellinger’s hesitation to marry Gallo, given her notorious past. Some express unease about interacting with her, unable to forget the gruesome incident that made headlines decades ago.
Gallo, who was found not guilty of malicious wounding by reason of temporary insanity in 1994, claimed she acted in response to years of abuse from her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt. Bobbitt, who was later acquitted of marital sexual assault, underwent surgery to reattach his severed penis and surprisingly regained normal function.
In the years since the incident, Gallo has become an advocate for domestic violence victims, founding The Lorena Gallo Foundation in 2018. Despite the dark shadow of her past, she has dedicated herself to helping others in similar situations and raising awareness about the issue of domestic abuse.
As the couple continues to navigate their lives in the suburbs, they are a reminder of the complexities of human relationships and the potential for redemption and growth, even in the face of unimaginable circumstances.
