Gunman carjacked victim during auto test drive, then crashed in front of passing patrol car: CPD

Chicago Man Poses as Car Buyer, Carjacks Victim at Gunpoint

A 22-year-old Chicago man, Michael Phillips, orchestrated a carjacking scheme by posing as a potential car buyer and then threatening the vehicle’s owner at gunpoint. The incident took place on April 3 when Phillips arranged a test drive of a gray 2008 Mercedes sedan and met the victim at their home in the 5400 block of West Potomac Avenue.

During the test drive, Phillips brandished a gun and held it against the back of the victim’s head, menacingly stating, “You want to die? I’ll kill you.” Fearing for their life, the victim complied and exited the vehicle.

Shortly after the carjacking, a Chicago police officer spotted the stolen Mercedes on Armitage Avenue. The officer observed the car speeding without license plates, swerving between lanes, and eventually losing control while turning onto Laporte Avenue, colliding with two parked cars. Phillips abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by pursuing officers.

Following the arrest, it was revealed that Phillips had outstanding warrants in Wisconsin. He was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and detained by Judge Luciano Panici, Jr. for his involvement in the crime.

This brazen act of carjacking highlights the dangers posed by individuals willing to resort to violence for personal gain. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and precaution when dealing with strangers, particularly in high-risk situations such as selling a vehicle.
