An Armed Man Fires Shot During Green Line Train Robbery Attempt

An armed man fired a shot during a robbery attempt aboard a Green Line train last week, prosecutors said. The incident occurred when a 26-year-old man from Ohio was riding the train southbound near 47th Street and was approached by 19-year-old Marquise Smith around 1:15 a.m. on May 28, according to prosecutors.

Smith allegedly threatened the victim, asking, “Do you want to die?” The victim quickly moved to the other end of the train car, but Smith pulled out a handgun and attempted to take the victim’s camera at gunpoint, pushing him from one end of the car to the other.

The victim managed to cross between cars while the train was in motion and blocked Smith by closing the door behind him and using his body weight to hold it shut. In response, Smith fired a shot into the air while standing between the two train cars. The victim then activated the train’s emergency signal, alerting the train operator.

Police officers detained Smith at the 51st Street station and recovered a loaded .38-caliber revolver with a defaced serial number from his pants pocket, according to a CPD arrest report. Smith now faces charges of attempted armed robbery, reckless discharge of a firearm, and aggravated possession of a firearm. Judge Rivanda Doss Beal has ordered him detained pending trial.
