Gunman fires at least 20 rounds, killing man on Near North Side
Authorities are currently on the lookout for a suspect who allegedly fired over 20 rounds from a rifle, resulting in the tragic death of a 40-year-old man on the Near North Side during the early hours of the morning.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the victim was standing in the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue when the shooting occurred around 2:10 a.m. The victim was swiftly transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a black truck or SUV fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. Upon reviewing surveillance footage, officers identified a black Chevrolet pickup truck heading eastbound from the location of the shooting at 2:08 a.m. Approximately 24 shell casings, believed to be from a rifle, were found at the crime scene.
This incident marks the seventh shooting on the Near North Side this year, a notable decrease compared to the 33 shootings recorded at this time last year. However, it is essential to note that 18 of last year’s victims were targeted in a single mass shooting outside a River North lounge, which is considered one of the worst in Chicago’s history.
