‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Braveheart’ Actor Was 82

Actor Michael Byrne, known for his roles in iconic films such as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” “Braveheart,” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” passed away on June 20 at the age of 82. The cause of his death has not been disclosed yet, as reported by The Guardian.

One of Byrne’s notable performances was in the penultimate “Harry Potter” film, where he portrayed an older version of Gellert Grindelwald, a character later played by Johnny Depp in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. He also played memorable roles in other blockbuster movies, including the villainous Vogel in “The Last Crusade” and the violent nationalist soldier Smythe in Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning “Braveheart.”

Beginning his television career in the 1960s, Byrne appeared in shows like “No Hiding Place,” “Silent Playground,” and “ITV Saturday Night Theatre.” He made his film debut in “The Scarlet Blade” in 1963 after honing his craft on stage with Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company. Byrne showcased his talent in various productions, acting alongside renowned actors such as Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens.

During the 1970s, Byrne starred in a series of World War II films, including “The Eagle Has Landed,” “A Bridge Too Far,” and “Force 10 From Navarone.” Throughout his illustrious career spanning over seven decades, Byrne accumulated more than 170 acting credits, with appearances in films like “Gangs of New York,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” and “Diana.”

Survived by his ex-wife Carole Nimmons, who took care of him in his final days, Byrne is also remembered by his daughters Tara and Bryony, as well as his grandchildren Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine.

Michael Byrne’s contributions to the entertainment industry will always be cherished, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of actors. May he rest in peace.
