Heat wave forecast: Dangerous temps to continue into July 4 holiday

A dangerous heat wave is currently sweeping through more than two dozen states in the Midwest, South, and East Coast, bringing prolonged extreme heat to these regions. The heat wave initially started in the Midwest before spreading eastward, where it is expected to persist through the Fourth of July weekend.

Amidst the peak of holiday travel, Amtrak has been forced to cancel over two dozen trains in the Northeast due to the intense heat. On Thursday, cities like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., experienced scorching temperatures, with the heat index reaching as high as 111 degrees. New York City also saw its first triple-digit day since 2012, with temperatures in Central Park hitting 100 degrees.

As the heat wave continues, New York City has activated its heat emergency plan, opening cooling centers across the city to help residents cope with the extreme temperatures. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul have urged New Yorkers to conserve power to reduce energy demand and prevent power outages.

The forecast for the Northeast indicates that the heat index will soar to 109 degrees in New York, 111 degrees in Philadelphia, and 113 degrees in Washington, D.C. The heat wave is expected to persist over the weekend, with temperatures feeling like triple digits across the region.

Overnight relief from the heat is minimal, making the situation even more perilous. On the Fourth of July, temperatures are expected to remain in the triple digits, with New York and Washington, D.C. feeling like 102 and 108 degrees, respectively.

As the heat and humidity shift towards the Southeast on Sunday and Monday, cities like Raleigh, North Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, are predicted to experience temperatures feeling like 107 degrees.

It is crucial to note that extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the U.S., with thousands of Americans succumbing to heat-related deaths since 2018.
