Popular Southern California Beach closed after massive sewage spill
A significant sewage spill in the upscale Southern California neighborhood of Laguna Beach has led to the closure of a popular beach just in time for the Fourth of July weekend. Thalia Beach has been off-limits to the public after a malfunctioning sewer line pump caused a 2,000-gallon sewage spill on Thursday.
The Orange County Health Care Agency announced the closure, stating, “Ocean Water Closure: Until further notice, the open coastal area spanning from 0.25 miles upcoast to 0.25 miles downcoast of Anita Street at Thalia Beach in Laguna Beach is closed to swimming, surfing, and diving due to a sewage spill.” As a result, the coastline will remain closed for a minimum of three days for ocean water contact sports until follow-up water quality monitoring indicates acceptable standards.
OC Supervisor Katrina Foley addressed the situation, revealing, “We’re closely monitoring an active sewage spill of approximately 2,000 gallons in Laguna Beach, caused by a malfunction of a force main sewer line pump.” The Orange County Environmental Health team is currently assessing water quality and determining the extent of necessary beach and ocean closures over the holiday weekend.
A half-mile stretch of beach has been closed due to the spill, and the public has been advised to refrain from entering the water in the affected area until further notice. Authorities are working diligently to resolve the issue and ensure the safety of residents and visitors to the area.
