Indonesian Zombie Film ‘The Elixir’ Hits No. 1 on Netflix Globally

Netflix’s Indonesian horror film “The Elixir” has taken the streaming world by storm, quickly climbing to the top of the rankings for non-English language titles. Within just a few days of its release on October 23, the film attracted over 11 million viewers worldwide.

Directed by Kimo Stamboel, the zombie thriller has captivated audiences in various markets across the globe. From Japan to South Africa, and from Germany to Brazil, “The Elixir” has secured first place in five markets and made its way into the top 10 most-watched films in 75 territories.

The movie’s storyline revolves around a family business that specializes in jamu, Indonesia’s traditional herbal remedies, located in a village outside Yogyakarta. When the patriarch of the family embarks on a quest for immortality, things take a dark turn, resulting in both internal family conflicts and a deadly outbreak.

Critics and viewers alike have praised the film for its culturally specific take on the zombie horror genre. By incorporating unique Indonesian elements and creatures inspired by the country’s native pitcher plant, “The Elixir” offers a fresh perspective on the genre.

Director Kimo Stamboel shared his vision for the film, stating, “I wanted to create a zombie film that truly feels Indonesian, not just through its setting or language, but through its core story. From Jamu and Javanese villages to family dynamics, I wanted to showcase the richness of Indonesian culture. The fact that audiences from different countries have embraced the film shows that local stories can have a global impact.”

The talented cast of “The Elixir” includes Mikha Tambayong, Eva Celia, Donny Damara, Dimas Anggara, Marthino Lio, and Kiki Narendra, with Edwin Nazir producing for Mowin Pictures.
