Insurance commissioner candidate reveals how she’ll rip up system

Stacy Korsgaden, a Republican candidate for California Insurance Commissioner, has promised to tackle insurance fraud and conduct a thorough audit of the California Department of Insurance if elected. Speaking at a town hall event in Tuolumne County, Korsgaden expressed her concern over the inexperience in implementing policies throughout the state, which prompted her to enter the race.

With decades of experience in the insurance industry, Korsgaden emphasized the need for change in California’s regulatory environment, citing the restrictive nature of regulations created under Proposition 103. She pointed out that these regulations have led to rising premiums and a decrease in the number of insurers operating in the state, ultimately causing a crisis in the insurance market.

One of Korsgaden’s top priorities is to attract more insurance carriers back into California to increase competition and stabilize rates. She proposed creating a new division within the Department of Insurance to encourage new investments and facilitate the entry of additional insurance companies into the California market. Additionally, she pledged to crack down on insurance fraud and improve the efficiency of departmental operations.

In light of recent events, including fines and potential license revocation for State Farm over mishandling of claims related to the 2025 wildfires, Korsgaden discussed the importance of wildfire prevention efforts. She praised communities that have invested in fuel reduction and fire mitigation, suggesting that they should receive insurance incentives for their proactive measures.

Korsgaden also expressed support for financial assistance programs aimed at helping homeowners pay for fire-hardening improvements, such as tax rebates and additional state funding for wildfire mitigation projects. She assured the residents of Tuolumne County that they would be among her first stops if elected, promising to bring insurance companies to the area.

Overall, Korsgaden’s platform focuses on reforming the insurance industry in California to address the ongoing crisis and create a more competitive and stable market. Her experience and proposals aim to bring about positive change and ensure the protection of consumers in the state.
