Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy defends new road trip reality series amid rising gas prices
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is facing criticism for his new reality series, “The Great American Road Trip,” which documents his family’s travels to iconic destinations across the United States. This comes at a time when gas prices in the U.S. have surged to over $4.50 a gallon due to the conflict in Iran.
Defending the project, Duffy accused his detractors of being unpatriotic and defended the series as a wholesome and patriotic celebration of America. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg criticized the show as being out of touch with regular families who can no longer afford road trips due to the high gas prices caused by the war.
“The Great American Road Trip” showcases Duffy and his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, as they visit historic sites like Civil War battlegrounds, the Mayflower landing site, and Yellowstone National Park. The series, set to air on YouTube, is described as an “unforgettable civic experience” to commemorate America’s 250th birthday.
In the trailer for the show, President Donald Trump is seen welcoming the Duffys in the Oval Office before they embark on their journey. Duffy clarified that the production costs were covered by Great American Road Trip Inc. and not taxpayers, and that ethics and budget officials approved his participation in the project.
The project’s sponsors include Boeing and United Airlines, companies overseen by Duffy in his role as transportation secretary. While Duffy and his family were not compensated for their involvement, United Airlines had no comment when approached, and Boeing declined to comment.
Tori Barnes, executive director of The Great American Road Trip, Inc., praised Duffy for his support of travel and tourism in America and highlighted his commitment to improving infrastructure for transportation.
In conclusion, “The Great American Road Trip” has sparked controversy but remains a project that Duffy believes celebrates the spirit of America. The series aims to showcase the beauty and history of the country while promoting a sense of patriotism and civic pride.
