Investment group comes forward to buy the Vancouver Whitecaps and move team to Las Vegas
An investment group led by Grant Gustavson, grandson of Public Storage founder B. Wayne Hughes, has made a bold move to purchase the Vancouver Whitecaps and relocate the Major League Soccer club to Las Vegas. The Whitecaps have been on the market for 16 months with no potential buyers until now.
Gustavson, in a statement, expressed excitement about the opportunity while respecting the league’s deliberations and community stakeholders. The investment group plans to privately finance the deal to buy and move the team, emphasizing that it is not connected to any recent arena proposals in Las Vegas.
Major League Soccer has stated that they will explore all options for the future of the Whitecaps, including a potential relocation. The team currently plays at BC Place, which is set to host seven games of this summer’s World Cup. However, the league has deemed the lease situation with the stadium unsustainable and prefers a soccer-specific venue for the team.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber highlighted the challenges with BC Place, including strict schedule restrictions and a lack of premium seating options. The government entity that owns and operates the stadium has limited the team’s ability to maximize revenue.
British Columbia’s government has been working with the Whitecaps to help lower costs and increase revenue at BC Place. However, they have made it clear that they will not purchase the team to prevent it from moving to another city.
The team’s supporters have been vocal in their desire to keep the Whitecaps in Vancouver, with many displaying signs saying “Save the ‘Caps” at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim expressed concern about the team’s potential relocation and outlined plans for a new stadium and entertainment district that would not rely on taxpayer dollars.
Garber remains hopeful that a solution can be found to keep the Whitecaps in Vancouver but has not ruled out the possibility of expansion to Las Vegas or other cities. The Whitecaps have acknowledged the challenges they face in attracting buyers committed to keeping the team in Vancouver due to stadium economics and revenue limitations.
Overall, the future of the Vancouver Whitecaps remains uncertain as the investment group led by Grant Gustavson considers the move to Las Vegas. The league will continue to evaluate all options as they work towards a positive outcome for the team, the fans, and the league as a whole.
