Katie Porter fights questions on temperament as only woman in crowded California gubernatorial race
Former Rep. Katie Porter, a candidate for California governor, found herself addressing questions about her temperament once again during a debate on Tuesday night. The issue arose after Porter released a campaign ad that made light of her past outbursts, sparking fresh criticism.
Porter acknowledged the scrutiny over viral videos showing her berating a staff member and threatening to walk out of an interview with a journalist. She defended herself during the CNN debate, pointing out the behavior of her male opponents, who engaged in interrupting, bickering, name-calling, and shouting.
“I can’t believe that on a stage with 30 minutes of interrupting and bickering and name-calling and shouting and disrespect … that anyone wants to talk about my temperament,” Porter stated. She called out her opponents for their unruly behavior, reminding them to stop the bickering.
Democratic strategist Maria Cardona praised Porter for handling the situation well, especially as the only woman on the stage. She noted that Porter’s response to the male candidates’ behavior was smart and necessary.
Political science professor Tim Krebs highlighted the double standard applied to female candidates in politics, where qualities like toughness and decisiveness are often viewed differently based on gender. He commended Porter for pointing out the inconsistency in how male candidates are judged for similar behavior.
However, Loyola Law School professor Jessica Levinson emphasized the importance of temperament for a governor, suggesting that Porter’s past behavior could potentially undermine her effectiveness in office. She pointed out that working with the state legislature and compromising require a certain level of temperament.
Porter’s campaign released an ad this week that made light of the situation, further highlighting her approach to addressing the issue. As the only woman among the prominent gubernatorial candidates, Porter has garnered support from influential organizations and lawmakers, emphasizing the need for diversity in leadership.
While women make up over half of California’s population, they are underrepresented in political leadership roles. Porter’s campaign focuses on her relatability to everyday Californians, highlighting her struggles as a working, single mother facing financial challenges.
Despite her efforts to address the questions about her temperament, some experts believe that Porter’s response may not fully resonate with voters who have seen the controversial videos. It remains to be seen how Porter’s campaign will navigate these challenges and appeal to voters in the upcoming election.
