Kia recalls 6K vehicles over possible seat belt defect that risks injury

Kia Recalling Thousands of Vehicles Due to Faulty Seat Belt Straps

Kia has issued a recall for thousands of vehicles over concerns regarding potentially faulty seat belt straps in the driver’s seat, which could increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

The recall affects specific 2027 Telluride and Telluride Hybrid vehicles that were manufactured between March 24 and May 12, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Approximately 1% of the 6,264 vehicles included in the recall, or around 63 cars, are estimated to have the defect, the Seoul-based automaker stated.

The issue arises from an error by the supplier, causing the seat belt emergency locking retractor on the driver’s side to lock, thus preventing the seat belt strap from extending and properly restraining an occupant during a crash, as per federal regulators.

This non-compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards has prompted the recall, the NHTSA confirmed.

Owners are advised to take their affected vehicles to a Kia dealership, where the seat belt assembly will be replaced free of charge. Additionally, Kia will reimburse owners for any repair expenses already incurred, based on a reimbursement plan filed on April 30.

Notification letters are expected to be sent to vehicle owners by July 31. For further assistance, owners can contact Kia’s customer service team at 800-333-4542 or reach out to the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
