Lakers fall to Rockets 99-93 in Game 5 in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Lakers had one mission in Game 5 against the Houston Rockets – to take their postseason life away. However, the Rockets had other plans and managed to secure a 99-93 victory on the Lakers’ home court, extending the first-round playoff series to at least one more game.
Despite star guard Austin Reaves making his return to the lineup after being sidelined with a left oblique strain, the Lakers struggled offensively for the second consecutive game. Reaves put up 22 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds in his first game back but had difficulties with his shooting, going 4 of 16 from the field.
LeBron James led the Lakers with 25 points and 7 rebounds, but missed a crucial shot in the final seconds that could have cut the deficit to one point. Deandre Ayton contributed 18 points and 17 rebounds to the Lakers’ efforts.
On the Rockets’ side, Jabari Smith led the way with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocked shots. The team’s strong performance from beyond the arc, making 14 of 40 three-pointers compared to the Lakers’ 7-of-27 shooting, played a significant role in their victory.
The Rockets’ ability to force a Game 6 after dropping the first two road games and the first home game under the playoff format is a rare feat, with only nine teams achieving this since 1984. Only two of the previous eight teams have managed to force a Game 7, highlighting the significance of the Rockets’ resilience.
The turning point in the game came when the Rockets capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Lakers, allowing Amen Thompson to hit a crucial three-pointer that extended their lead early in the fourth quarter. Despite the Lakers’ efforts to stay close, they were unable to cut the deficit to less than three points.
Looking ahead, Game 6 of the Lakers-Rockets series is set to take place at Toyota Center on Friday. The matchup promises to be a thrilling continuation of the intense battle between these two teams. Stay tuned for more exciting basketball action as the series unfolds.
