Life-threatening flash flooding fueled by days of heavy rain slams multiple states as Arthur sweeps the South
Post-Tropical Storm Arthur is currently wreaking havoc in the South, causing potentially catastrophic and life-threatening flooding in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama due to heavy rainfall.
The remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur continue to pose a threat, with millions of Americans at risk of flash flooding from Eastern Texas to Georgia. A Level 4 out of 4 flash flood threat has been issued for Thursday, with a Level 3 out of 4 risk for Friday in the Southeast U.S., where widespread rain and catastrophic flooding are expected.
Cities such as Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi; Montgomery, Alabama; and Atlanta are at high risk of flooding. The combination of Pacific and Gulf moisture is creating a persistent plume across the South, increasing the flooding risk in the mentioned states.
Flood watches are in effect across most of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Tragically, the flooding has already claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy in Texas who drowned in a flooded pond.
Authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation, deploying boats and specialized diving teams. Despite extensive efforts, the teenager was found submerged in the water and pronounced dead at the scene by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
The forecast predicts widespread rainfall of 5 to 8 inches from Southern Texas to Alabama, with some areas in Louisiana possibly experiencing 8 to 12 inches of rain, leading to deadly flash flooding.
Apart from the flash flood risk, there is a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm threat in coastal Mississippi and Southern Alabama, where tornadoes are a possibility. As Arthur’s remnants move towards the Carolinas, rounds of persistent rain are expected to begin on Thursday, lasting into Friday.
By Friday, a new area of low pressure may form, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain to coastal regions along the East Coast. Although this is unlikely to develop into a tropical threat, it is essential to monitor the situation for potential development in the coming days.
