‘Line of Duty’ Lands Robert Carlyle as Season 7 Guest Lead

Robert Carlyle to Guest Lead in Line of Duty Season 7

BAFTA-winning actor Robert Carlyle has been announced as the guest lead in the upcoming seventh installment of Jed Mercurio’s acclaimed BBC crime thriller “Line of Duty.” Known for his roles in “Trainspotting,” “The Full Monty,” and “28 Weeks Later,” Carlyle will portray Detective Constable Shaun Massie in the new series, which is set to begin filming this spring and will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer next year.

Carlyle joins returning series leads Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar, making him the first new cast member to be unveiled for the upcoming season. He follows a distinguished line of guest leads that includes Kelly Macdonald, Stephen Graham, and Thandiwe Newton.

DC Shaun Massie is a Specialist Rifle Officer and veteran marksman with Tactical Operations Unit 7 (TO-7), responsible for targeting Organized Crime Groups. Described as a solitary individual who keeps to himself, Massie’s demeanor changes drastically when his commanding officer, DI Dominic Gough, is accused of misconduct.

The new season picks up with AC-12 disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, facing their most challenging case yet in an increasingly hostile environment for anticorruption efforts.

Robert Carlyle expressed his excitement about joining the series, stating, “DC Massie is an extraordinary character, and I look forward to bringing him to life.” Creator Jed Mercurio praised Carlyle’s talent, remarking that viewers will be captivated by his performance.

World Productions CEO Simon Heath and BBC Drama director Lindsay Salt also commended Carlyle’s casting, highlighting his exceptional acting abilities and fit for the show.

The new season will be directed by Jennie Darnell and produced by Ken Horn, with Mercurio, Heath, and Nick Lambon serving as executive producers. Filming will take place in Belfast with support from Northern Ireland Screen, and World Productions will handle international distribution.

Fans can catch up on seasons 1-6 of “Line of Duty” streaming on BBC iPlayer while awaiting the highly anticipated seventh season.
