And then there’s the “note” from HBO. 

King: We wanted to have a moment where she makes a choice. She’s always been a bit of a martyr, in a way. And then she makes a choice to be honest on the podcast and say, “I don’t want to do this anymore.” And then HBO offers her a lot of money, and she says no. That was the moment where she’s not going to be the martyr anymore. She’s going to do what she wants to do.

Kudrow: It’s a moment that’s very decadent.

King: We always knew that the end would be a musical number. We knew that it had to be a musical number. And we knew it had to be the last number in “Chicago.” It was a way of showing that she’s learned something. She’s learned that she doesn’t have to be the martyr anymore.
