Los Angeles warehouse fire prompts shelter-in-place orders due to hazardous air
LOS ANGELES — Massive Warehouse Fire Prompts Shelter-in-Place Orders in Downtown LA
A fire broke out at a sprawling warehouse near downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, casting a dark shadow over the city and triggering shelter-in-place orders in the surrounding area due to concerns of hazardous air quality.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was alerted to the blaze around 2:30 p.m. as thick plumes of smoke billowed from the burning roof of the warehouse located in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. Images broadcasted by local news outlets captured the dramatic scene as firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the inferno.
Authorities quickly issued a warning to residents in the vicinity, advising them of the presence of hazardous materials in the area. Residents were urged to take precautions by closing all windows, doors, and vents, turning off air conditioning systems, and seeking shelter in an interior room with their loved ones and pets.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Jennifer Middleton reassured the public that initial concerns about an ammonia line being compromised had subsided. By late afternoon, firefighters had successfully extinguished the roof blaze and were conducting assessments inside the warehouse to ensure the safety of the premises.
The warehouse, identified as a cold storage facility owned by Lineage Logistics for the storage and transportation of temperature-controlled goods, spans an impressive 491,000 square feet (45,600 square meters) of space according to the company’s website. Despite the magnitude of the incident, Lineage Logistics has yet to issue a formal statement in response to the fire.
