Myanmar state television broadcasts army crackdown on scam centers

BANGKOK — The military government in Myanmar has launched a massive crackdown on online scam centers, showcasing the demolition of buildings and the detention of over 1,000 foreigners on state television.

Myanmar is infamous for being a hub for cyberscam operations that target individuals worldwide. These scams often involve using fake romantic gestures to lure victims into fraudulent investment schemes. The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that such activities generate nearly $40 billion in annual revenue for criminal organizations.

The recent detailed reports aired on MRTV television reflect the military government’s attempt to showcase its efforts following months of negative publicity and international pressure. The government, which took power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected administration in 2021, has been widely condemned for its brutal suppression of dissent.

In a recent operation in Shwe Kokko, authorities detained 1,746 foreigners within six days. This crackdown is part of a series of raids on major scam centers, including KK Park and Shwe Kokko.

Since January, a total of 12,586 foreigners have been detained, with 9,978 of them deported to their home countries via Thailand. Some individuals, mainly from African nations, have reported being deceived into working at these centers and prevented from leaving.

Authorities seized a significant amount of equipment used in fraudulent activities, including computers, mobile phones, satellite devices, and internet routers at Shwe Kokko. MRTV has been airing daily footage of security operations and the destruction of scam centers.

The military government claims to have initiated the crackdown on online scams and illegal gambling in early September, although critics argue that the main perpetrators continue to operate elsewhere.

Ethnic minority militias, particularly in the Myawaddy region, also play a significant role. Various Karen militias, including the Border Guard Force and the Karen National Union, are active in the area.

Both groups have denied involvement in the scam operations, despite the military government’s accusations.
