Mysteriously missing Rep. Tom Kean Jr. to return to Congress
Rep. Thomas Kean Jr., a New Jersey congressman, has been mysteriously missing from Capitol Hill since early March. However, his political advisor, Harrison Neely, has announced that Kean plans to return to in-person work on June 30. This return date coincides with the House’s scheduled break for Independence Day recess on July 2.
During his absence, Kean has missed over 135 roll call votes, citing a personal health matter as the reason for his time away. Despite the lack of clarity surrounding his health situation, Kean’s team has assured that he is focused on his recovery and eager to resume his full schedule in Congress.
Representing one of the most competitive districts in the country, Kean is facing a tough reelection battle against Democrat Rebecca Bennett in New Jersey’s 7th district. Despite not making an appearance when he won the Republican nomination uncontested, Kean has assured that his health situation has not impacted his cognitive abilities and is not chronic.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has defended Kean during his absence, emphasizing that the congressman will eventually disclose the details of his health issue to the public. Johnson has stressed that Kean’s health matter is not scandalous and that it’s not uncommon for members of Congress to face health challenges.
As Kean prepares to return to Congress, he has expressed confidence in his doctors’ prognosis for a full recovery. He has also indicated that he anticipates returning to voting and the campaign trail in the coming weeks. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his health situation, Kean remains optimistic about his future in Congress and his reelection bid.
