Neil Druckmann Exits ‘The Last of Us’ Ahead of Season 3 on HBO

Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of “The Last of Us” TV series at HBO, has made a surprising announcement that he will be stepping away from his creative involvement in the show. In a statement posted on the official Naughty Dog Instagram account, Druckmann explained that he has completed work on season 2 and feels that now is the right time to transition his focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects. This includes writing and directing their next game, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” as well as his responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative.

Druckmann expressed gratitude for the opportunity to co-create the show with Craig Mazin and praised the talented cast and crew for their dedication in adapting “The Last of Us Part I” and continuing with “The Last of Us Part II.” Halley Gross, who co-wrote “The Last of Us Part II” with Druckmann and served as an executive producer and writer on the HBO series, has also announced that she will be stepping back from her day-to-day work on the show to make space for future projects.

The collaboration between Druckmann and Mazin on the HBO series has been a career highlight for both creators. Mazin, known for his work on the critically-acclaimed series “Chernobyl,” expressed his excitement to continue working with the cast and crew to deliver the quality that audiences have come to expect from the show.

Despite Druckmann’s departure, he will still be credited as an executive producer on the series. “The Last of Us” Season 1 was a huge success, becoming one of the highest-rated drama series in HBO history and earning 24 Primetime Emmy Award nominations. The show was renewed for a third season in April.

As Druckmann shifts his focus to Naughty Dog’s next game, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” fans can look forward to a new project starring Tati Gabrielle with a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. While no release date has been set yet, anticipation is high for what the talented team at Naughty Dog will deliver.

The news of Druckmann and Gross stepping away from the HBO series was first reported by The Ankler. Despite their departure, the show will continue with Mazin at the helm, ensuring that the story of “The Last of Us” will be brought to life with the same care and dedication that fans have come to love.
