New York Gov. Hochul formally endorses Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor
New York Governor Kathy Hochul officially threw her support behind Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in an opinion piece published on Sunday night. In her article, she expressed confidence in Mamdani’s ability to lead the city through its current challenges with courage, urgency, and optimism.
Hochul highlighted her conversations with Mamdani, acknowledging their disagreements but emphasizing their shared commitment to creating a safe and affordable New York City where opportunities are accessible to all. She praised Mamdani’s focus on affordability and his determination to make the city a better place for families.
The Governor also touched on various topics that she and Mamdani have discussed, including policing, combating antisemitism, and the city’s economy. She stressed the importance of having a mayor who would not back down in the face of opposition, particularly from former President Donald Trump.
While acknowledging that they may not always see eye to eye on every issue, Hochul emphasized the importance of unity in standing against divisive forces. She praised Mamdani’s leadership and commitment to standing up for the values that define New York City.
Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani comes after he secured the Democratic mayoral primary in June. As a prominent figure in New York politics, her support could significantly influence Mamdani’s agenda, particularly in terms of securing funding and enacting policy proposals.
Mamdani faces tough competition in the mayoral race from incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, both running as independents. Despite challenges from within the Democratic Party, Mamdani has garnered support from Senator Chris Van Hollen, who criticized New York lawmakers for their hesitance to endorse him.
The endorsement from Hochul, a moderate Democrat, underscores Mamdani’s efforts to appeal to a broader base of voters and distance himself from past positions deemed extreme by his opponents. Mamdani recently apologized for calling the NYPD “racist” in a social media post from 2020, showing a willingness to address past controversies and move forward.
In response to Hochul’s endorsement, Mamdani expressed gratitude and a commitment to working together to build a stronger and more inclusive New York City. He praised the Governor for her support and vowed to continue fighting for the well-being of all New Yorkers.
Overall, Hochul’s endorsement adds momentum to Mamdani’s campaign and signals a united front within the Democratic Party as they strive to secure a better future for New York City.
