North Side murder suspect kept dismembered woman’s body in refrigerator, prosecutors say
A Disturbing Case of Murder and Concealment Unfolds in West Rogers Park
A West Rogers Park man, Brandon Sanders, is facing a string of serious charges following a series of gruesome events that have shocked the community. Sanders, already charged with murder in the random rooftop killing of an air conditioning repairman, has now been accused of concealing the death and dismembering the body of a young woman found in his refrigerator.
Sanders, 33, appeared in court before Cook County Judge Shauna Boliker, who ordered him detained on the new charges. In addition to the murder charge related to the death of Rasim Katanic, Sanders also faces federal sex trafficking counts, including one involving a minor.
The case against Sanders began to unfold on May 12, 2023, when Katanic was brutally attacked and stabbed while working on a rooftop. Surveillance footage showed Sanders climbing to the rooftop after a series of suspicious activities in the area, including burglarizing a nearby apartment and stealing clothes. Katanic’s wallet was found in the apartment, linking Sanders to the crime scene.
After the murder, Sanders was seen wearing the stolen clothes and carrying Katanic’s keys. He made alarming statements to employees at a furniture store, indicating his involvement in the crime. Despite these red flags, Sanders was not arrested until June 29, after seeking medical help from an Evanston police officer.
A chilling discovery was made during a search of Sanders’ home, where investigators found the body of Iman Al-Sarraj, 18, in the refrigerator. Al-Sarraj, who had been living with Sanders and was reportedly a victim of sex trafficking, had suffered fatal injuries from an assault. The gruesome scene included evidence of burning and dismemberment, leading to additional charges against Sanders.
Prior to these incidents, Sanders had exhibited concerning behavior, including making references to a terrorist plot and claiming to have killed his girlfriend. These warning signs were not acted upon until the tragic events unfolded.
Sanders now faces charges of concealing a homicidal death and dismembering a human body in connection with Al-Sarraj’s case. The community is left reeling from the shocking revelations, highlighting the importance of vigilance and swift action in preventing such tragedies.
