‘Snowfall’ Spinoff ‘The Drop’ Sets FX Release Date

FX Announces Premiere Date for “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga” Spinoff Series

FX has officially set the release date for the highly anticipated “Snowfall” spinoff series titled “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.” Fans can mark their calendars for September 8, when the new show will make its debut on FX and Hulu. International viewers will also be able to stream the eight-episode drama on Disney+, with episodes releasing weekly at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

“The Drop” continues the narrative of “Snowfall,” which delves into the devastating crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles. The series will see the return of Gail Bean and Isaiah John as their respective characters, Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons.

The show’s official logline sets the stage for the intense drama that lies ahead:

“Wanda is determined to use West Coast rap as a catalyst to revolutionize American culture. She assembles a diverse group of talented individuals to help achieve their collective ambitions. However, she must navigate the treacherous intersection of music and street politics, drawing in her cousins Lamar Kinsey (Asante Blackk) and James Kinsey (Peyton Alex Smith), as well as the volatile local rapper Artillery (Simmie “Buddy” Sims III) who is entangled with law enforcement. Wanda’s collaboration with former drug dealer turned label owner Darryl “DG” Grant (Brandon Mychal Smith) presents both opportunities and challenges, intensifying the tensions between Wanda and Leon, who is determined to leave his criminal past behind and seek redemption through his legal clinic. As aspirations, loyalties, and survival clash, the characters must confront the risks they are willing to take to establish a lasting legacy in a world filled with threats.”

In addition to Bean and John, the series features a talented ensemble cast including Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, Demetrius Grosse, and Quincy Chad reprising his role as Big Deon from “Snowfall.”

The production team behind “The Drop” includes executive producers Malcolm Spellman, Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson, and Paul Garnes. FX Productions is responsible for bringing the series to life, with initial rumors of the show’s development surfacing in 2023 and a pilot order being confirmed in 2025.

“Snowfall,” the predecessor of “The Drop,” was co-created by John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron. The show enjoyed a successful six-season run on FX from 2017 to 2023, boasting a talented cast that included Damson Idris, Carter Hudson, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Amin Joseph, Angela Louis, Michael Hyatt, Isaiah John, Kevin Carroll, and Suzy Nakamura.
