Northlake police warn of gas pump screw scam

Gas station scams are becoming more prevalent, and the Northlake Police Department recently issued a warning about a new low-tech but effective scam that is targeting unsuspecting customers. This scam, known as the “screw scam,” involves scammers jamming a small screw into the nozzle cradle of a gas pump.

The way the scam works is that when a customer finishes pumping gas and hangs the nozzle back up, the screw blocks the lever and prevents it from closing properly. As a result, the pump still thinks that the customer is fueling their car, even though they have already finished. This allows a thief who is waiting nearby to pull up and fill their own tank while the pump continues to charge the previous user’s card.

To avoid falling victim to this scam, customers are advised to check the cradle of the nozzle before starting to fuel their car to ensure that it is clear of any screws. Additionally, it is recommended to wait until the pump’s screen has reset and shows that the transaction is complete before leaving the gas station. Customers should also listen for the nozzle to click back into place and shut off, print their receipt to confirm the final total, and politely decline any offers from strangers to hang the nozzle up for them.

If a customer notices a jammed pump, they should not touch it and instead notify the station attendant immediately so that they can lock down the pump. If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, it is important to contact the Northlake Police Department as well as your bank or credit card company to report any unauthorized charges on your card.

Gas station scams like the “screw scam” are a reminder to always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings when fueling up your vehicle. By taking simple precautions and staying alert, you can help protect yourself from falling victim to these types of fraudulent schemes.
