Oklahoma becomes latest state to sue Roblox over child safety concerns
Oklahoma Files Lawsuit Against Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns
Oklahoma has joined the growing list of states taking legal action against Roblox, a popular gaming platform, for failing to protect children from predators and explicit content. Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced the lawsuit on Thursday, accusing Roblox of endangering children and deceiving parents.
The 51-page lawsuit filed in Cleveland County District Court claims that Roblox neglected basic safety controls in favor of user growth, allowing predators to exploit minors on the platform. Drummond alleges that Roblox facilitated the systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children in Oklahoma and across the United States.
The lawsuit highlights a case where an Oklahoma mother sued Roblox after her 12-year-old daughter was coerced into sending explicit photos and videos to an adult posing as a teenager on the platform. This incident, along with several others, has raised concerns about child safety on Roblox.
Oklahoma’s Consumer Protection Act violations include misrepresentations to consumers about the risks children face on the platform. The state is seeking civil penalties for each violation and permanent injunctions to enforce better safeguards and prevent deceptive practices.
Roblox boasts over 150 million daily active users, with a significant portion being children between 9 and 12 years old. The platform has announced plans to introduce enhanced parental controls for users under 16 in June to address safety concerns.
In response to the lawsuit, Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman emphasized the company’s commitment to online child safety. He stated that Roblox has implemented advanced safety measures, including AI-powered detection and human moderation, to protect users from harmful content and interactions.
Roblox claims to be the first online gaming platform to require age verification for chat features and prohibits the exchange of images or videos in chats. Kaufman reiterated the company’s collaboration with law enforcement to address violations and continuously improve user protections.
Despite the legal challenges, Roblox remains dedicated to setting a new standard in online safety and working with authorities to keep children safe. The company’s proactive approach to addressing concerns and enhancing safety features reflects its commitment to protecting young users.
With multiple states suing Roblox and ongoing efforts to strengthen child safety measures, the platform faces mounting pressure to address vulnerabilities and ensure a secure environment for all users.
